This is how Satu Tuomela, the founder of Shake the Dust (SD), describes this practice.
I tried SD for the first time in Bali in February 2022, at a training with Satu, who has been my main teacher for the past 4 years. I instantly fell in love with it, as it was one of the few times I truly enjoyed doing squats and burpees and being in a really intense workout. It was also one of the first times after years, that I was doing a workout for fun and not with the goal of losing weight, or getting fit. I was moving because my body loves moving. And I kept going even when it felt extremely hard, because I felt so empowered and so much community around me.
We were 30+ people practicing together and it felt so powerful to be in the practice together. My whole body was showered in love (and sweat), and I realised how much I had missed moving my body in this way after years of practicing almost only yoga, and very little cardio. Since then I have been craving it more and more and I have been dreaming about the day I could start teaching it and sharing it.
A few months ago I signed up for a Shake the Dust training in Sweden, and so in mid June I went to this idyllic lake-view training and completed it by teaching my first SD session to my fellow trainees. It was such an amazing experience, and really felt like the best start of my summer.
One of the things I love the most about this practice is how essential music is in supporting the class. The beats carry us through the practice as if it was a dance. And we dance not as a performance but as a liberation. From all the ideas we have about how our body should look like, move like, feel like. It is a dance of freedom.
I hope to see you very soon for a shake <3
